When people find out I'm a Disney Cruise Line travel advisor, they usually assume I had worked my way up to Concierge after years of cruising.

The truth? I accidentally did things backward.

My very first Disney Cruise wasn't just my first Disney Cruise...It was my first cruise vacation ever. (Well...unless you count the years I spent in the U.S. Navy. Trust me, that's a completely different kind of cruise!)

Because we were celebrating a special occasion, my son's 15th birthday, we decided to book Concierge.

At the time, I had absolutely nothing to compare it to. I assumed everyone boarded this way. It wasn't until later, after talking with other cruisers and sailing in different stateroom categories, that I realized just how special those first-day moments really were.

I assumed everyone had access to a beautiful lounge. I assumed everyone had Concierge Hosts ready to help throughout the cruise. Looking back now, I realize just how unique that experience really was.

Now, after helping countless families plan Disney Cruise Line vacations and sailing in different stateroom categories, here are five things I wish every first-time Concierge guest knew before they book.

1. Concierge Isn't Just a Bigger Stateroom

Before my first cruise, I assumed Concierge was mostly about having a nicer room. I quickly realized that's only one small part of the experience.

The real luxury isn't the square footage. It's how effortless everything feels. From priority embarkation to the Concierge Lounge, dedicated Hosts, and personalized service throughout the sailing, so many of the little stresses disappear before they ever become problems.

2. I Didn't Realize How Much the Concierge Lounge Would Become Part of My Vacation

If someone had asked me before the cruise what I'd be most excited about, I probably would have said the stateroom.

Instead, one of my favorite memories became the Concierge Lounge.

It became our quiet place. A place to grab coffee in the morning. Enjoy a snack during the afternoon. Relax with a glass of champagne after boarding. Have multiple Caramel Lattes each, which is a big deal to a 15 year old. Or simply take a break while the rest of the ship buzzed with activity.

Sometimes the best part of a busy vacation is having somewhere peaceful to recharge.

3. The Concierge Hosts Are the Hidden Magic

Before sailing, I honestly didn't understand what Concierge Hosts actually did.

Now I do.

Need help adjusting a reservation? Looking for advice? Need assistance with plans during your cruise? The Concierge team is there to help make your vacation feel seamless. They're incredibly knowledgeable, genuinely kind, and somehow manage to make everything feel effortless.

I didn't realize until later that many of the little things they handled were things other guests simply had to take care of themselves.

4. Concierge Sells Out Faster Than Most People Realize

One thing I didn't know before my first sailing was just how limited Concierge availability really is.

There are only a small number of Concierge accommodations on each ship. For popular sailings like holiday cruises, Alaska itineraries, maiden voyages, or new ship sailings, those rooms often disappear long before the rest of the ship sells out.

If Concierge is something you're seriously considering, booking early gives you the best chance of getting the stateroom category you really want.

5. I'd Recommend Concierge...But Not to Everyone

People are often surprised when I say this. Even after experiencing Concierge as my very first cruise, I don't recommend it for every family.

Some families will absolutely love every Concierge benefit.

Others may have a better vacation by booking a beautiful verandah stateroom and using the savings for another Disney Cruise, Port Adventures, or a few extra nights at Walt Disney World Resort.

That's why every conversation I have with a client starts with one simple question:

"What kind of vacation do you want to have?" Because there isn't one perfect answer. There's only the answer that's right for your family.

My Biggest Takeaway

Looking back, I don't think Concierge made me fall in love with Disney Cruise Line. It simply gave me an unforgettable introduction to it. Not because I think everyone should book it. But because it showed me just how much Disney Cruise Line values exceptional service.

Today, that experience helps me guide my clients with confidence.

Sometimes Concierge is absolutely worth the investment.

Sometimes it isn't.

My goal has never been to sell the most expensive vacation. My goal is to help families book the vacation they'll remember for years to come.
