Planning your first vacation with Disney Cruise Line is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming at first.
After sailing more times than I can count and helping many families plan their first Disney cruise, I hear the same thing again and again: “I wish I had known that before we sailed.”
Let’s make sure you do not feel that way. Here are my top tips to help you make the most of your first Disney Cruise Line vacation.
1. Book Early for the Best Stateroom Choices
Disney Cruise Line releases itineraries well in advance, and the best staterooms go quickly. Booking early gives you better location options, preferred deck placement, connecting stateroom availability, and often lower pricing compared to waiting.
2. Choose the Right Ship for Your Family
Each Disney ship has its own personality, and choosing the right one matters. For example, the Disney Wish is great for shorter Bahamian sailings, the Disney Treasure shines on longer Caribbean itineraries, and the Disney Dream is a favorite for first-time cruisers sailing from Florida. The right ship can shape your entire experience.
3. Download the DCL Navigator App Before You Sail
The Navigator app becomes your daily planner onboard. You can use it to check schedules, track character appearances, view dining rotations, and message family members while onboard.
4. Don’t Overpack, But Do Pack Smart
Cruising is easier to pack for than most vacations because so much is included.
Plan for casual daytime outfits, themed attire for Pirate Night, more than one swimsuit, sunscreen, and a small bag for port days. Laundry rooms are available onboard if needed.
5. Rotational Dining Is One of Disney’s Best Features
Each evening, your family rotates through three themed restaurants, and your servers rotate with you. They quickly learn your preferences, your kids’ favorites, and any dietary needs, creating a personalized dining experience.

6. Character Meet and Greets Are Included
Character experiences onboard are included in your cruise fare. You will find princess gatherings, deck parties, surprise appearances, and themed meet and greets throughout your sailing.
7. Arrive the Night Before Your Cruise
Whenever possible, plan to arrive the night before embarkation. This helps avoid delays, traffic issues, and unnecessary stress so you can start your cruise relaxed.
8. Castaway Cay Is a Highlight for Most First-Time Cruisers
Disney Cruise Line’s private island is often a guest favorite. Your visit includes beach access, island barbecue lunch, tram transportation, lounge chairs, and umbrellas. Optional upgrades like cabanas are available but not required.

9. Youth Clubs Are Truly Exceptional
Disney Cruise Line youth spaces are some of the best at sea. Kids can explore themed spaces inspired by Star Wars, Marvel, and more, along with creative activity areas and dedicated tween and teen lounges.

10. There’s Plenty to Do for Adults, Too
Disney Cruise Line offers a great balance for adults as well. Enjoy adults-only dining, quiet café spaces, adults-only pools, and live entertainment lounges.

11. Soft Drinks and Ice Cream Are Included
Unlike many cruise lines, Disney includes soft drinks at beverage stations, soft serve ice cream, and coffee and tea.
12. Pirate Night Is a Must Experience
Most Bahamian and Caribbean sailings include Pirate Night. Expect themed menus, fireworks at sea, deck parties, and guests fully dressed for the occasion.

13. Book Port Adventures Early
Popular excursions can sell out before your sailing. Booking early helps secure experiences like snorkeling, beach escapes, boat tours, and wildlife encounters.
14. Plan Some Downtime
There is always something happening onboard, but not everything needs to be scheduled. Some of the best moments come from simply enjoying the ocean, grabbing a snack together, or relaxing in the evening.
15. Work with a Disney Cruise Specialist
Planning a Disney cruise involves choosing the right ship, itinerary, and stateroom. Working with a specialist helps simplify the process and ensures you are making the best choices for your family.
